Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) Practice Exam

Two different organizations certify endoscope reprocessing. HSPA offers the CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocessor); CBSPD offers a separate credential, the C.F.E.R., with its own distinct experience requirements. This page covers HSPA's CER.

One thing worth knowing upfront: CER has no CRCST prerequisite. You can pursue it as your first sterile processing certification, standalone, without already holding CRCST.

Eligibility requires real hands-on time: a minimum of three months reprocessing endoscopes, paid or volunteer, at a medical center, hospital, surgery center, or independent endoscope center, accumulated within the past three years. That experience needs to include pre-cleaning, testing, decontaminating, inspecting, disinfecting or sterilizing, transporting, and storing endoscopes, the full workflow.

The exam: 150 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours.

Recertification runs more frequently than many credentials you might be used to. HSPA lists CER (and CIS) certifications as requiring 6 continuing education credits annually, a shorter renewal cycle than credentials that go 2 or 3 years between requirements.

Because the exam covers the complete endoscope reprocessing workflow, pre-cleaning through storage, comprehensive review across every stage of the process pays off more than deep focus on any single step, even the ones that feel most central to daily practice.

If you've seen guidance suggesting you need CRCST first, that's likely describing a different certification path, or conflating CER with a different HSPA credential entirely. Confirm your eligibility directly with HSPA if you're unsure.
